The worst part of the opaque regulatory state is the uncertainty and subjectivity

If an agency wants to setup rules they should do so explicitly and apply evenly. But you have some tool that's incredibly useful and now regulators are concerned about data collection? Is the data policy unclear or illegal? I don't get it.

Regarding incorrect information about people, I think that's just the nature of llms and it's pretty clear. However big social networks and even news media regularly posts incorrect info about people and it's often intentional. But they don't face similar scrutiny.

This just seems to me a knee jerk response from an agency that wants to exert influence. Whatever happens you can bet that it will benefit openai as the predominant player. They will always be able to respond to regulatory requests, however some open source developer will think twice as not to draw the ire of an opaque regulator

How do you expect the FTC to set up rules without investigating the item its trying to regulate?

That's all that's happened here. It sent OpenAI a 20-page letter asking questions.

The same FTC that let Microsoft buyout one of the largest 3rd party publishers in the game industry by losing in court? I don’t think ChatGPT’s maker has anything to worry about. US regulators have no teeth if you are rich it seems.

Can't let the masses have a tool as powerful as this, no siree.

If OpenAI were genuinely dedicated to the availability of their technology for "the masses", they would commit to a FOSS model.

Instead, their current approach appears primarily targeted at individuals and corporations that possess the financial means to afford their premium pricing, thereby limiting the reach and inclusivity of their tools.
