I love these threads, and always learn or pick up something new.
From my side, I've been working on a multi-lingual first words book for a baby. None of the published books have our mix of languages (which is fair enough, I don't think there is much of a market for it!) and so I decided to create our own. It's just images and then the word translated into three different languages alongside it (like a typical first words book). I used Google's AI for the images, and it has done a surprisingly good job of creating baby friendly images, with enough detail to spark interest.
The other tangential benefit is that I found it awkward to speak in my mother tongue, but having this book helps break that by having me speak in that language and then leads to it feeling much more natural in other contexts with babies.
This is not very technical project (though if I had the time it could easily become a fun project where people select their unique mix of languages and the book gets produced).
If anybody is in a similar boat and wants to produce their own version for their mix of languages then please let me know and message here - I will happily share the Canva file with you (you'll just need to write in the words yourself). Thanks for making this, and making it freely available. I actually have a use case for your other product: pdfredactoronline.com as I need to redact personal info on job applications, and I'm delighted to have come across it in this thread. Thanks for solving a problem.
It's great, used it pretty extensively yesterday! My only request would be if there was a way to undo your last redaction (apologies if there is a way and I missed it). I found that if I got it wrong I had to refresh the page to start over. It's not a big deal though, and either way, it's a really good tool and I've recommended it be used as part of our internal recruitment process going forward. Thanks again!
This is great to see on the front page! I include it as part of the newsletter I run on the best/nostalgic side of the internet so it’s cool to see it resonating with people here for that reason.
This is really interesting, thanks for sharing! I'm keen to know how it compares to a tool like Pulsar? I've been quoted a huge amount to use their service, and it looks like mention.us basically fulfills the same social listening function? If it does then I will definitely push my org to sign up!
Thanks! I haven't used Pulsar, but the general answer is that mentions.us is focussed on sending you alerts for notifications, whereas more sophisticated social listening tools provide a lot more analytics (e.g., sentiment analysis).
If your company just wants alerts when their keywords are mentioned on social media then mentions.us should work great for them. If you work for Coca Cola then you likely need something very different from your social listening tool!
I love that you've shared how you built it and been so transparent around pricing. I think anything that helps reduce asymmetry of information in the markets is a good thing, and I'm glad this exists. Just a question, what makes your approach different to: https://www.capitoltrades.com/politicians What made you want to build your own rather than use this site?
This has prompted some interesting points around the value of using a mobile in a chamber which I've enjoyed reading. However, I wonder if the tool could be re-purposed to catch drivers using mobile phones whilst driving? I imagine there are privacy concerns here, but it might be interesting to explore it.
I'm trying to apply the idea of microadventures [1] to the internet, allowing folks to have nice 5 minute breaks on the internet. I don't know if it will catch on - but it's something I need to be honest, so I mainly built it for myself!
Currently, it's set up as a daily (short) newsletter with a different link each day, but I'm trying to learn marketing to figure out how to get others interested. I've enjoyed creating it, but would like to see if others like it before moving on to a new project. Link to project: https://www.thedailydetour.co.uk/
I really like this! I created a month or so back - https://www.thedailydetour.co.uk/, inspired by what seems like a similar ambition! I wanted a way to get interesting/fun/amusing things sent to me as a nice break from work and figured others would too so I built it. Thanks for making the internet a bit of a better place!
Fun to see the questions, but I would love even more to read the essays they got along with the mark scheme/examiner's comments.
What is they are looking for? And what in their eyes makes a good answer? That would be interesting for me to see and helpful in terms of developing my own thinking.
For me it's less about training for a job, and more just curiosity - what makes one answer to these questions better than another? I wonder what criteria they use and knowing that criteria would be helpful to me when looking to develop my own thinking.
