Personally I’m using cloud flare because there’s not a lot of options. The only other major one most tech enthusiasts know about is 8.8.8.8 and that’s owned by Google.

It would be good if there were more players in this space. A nonprofit might help here too, like Mozilla. Maybe they can run a public DNS server.



I think you might be kind of missing the point here—if you run your own recursive resolver, e.g. unbound, you’re not relying on any public DNS server.


quad9 is run by a foundation. Most of it's donations come from corporate sponsors, but it's definitely a better option.
