Elon Musk and Spiky Intelligence (natesilver.net)

Bad timing for Nate releasing a book about how smart our new tech overlords are just as Musk unleashes his weaponized incompetence motivated by conspiracy theories.

I guess this is his attempt to square that circle.

Unfortunate too that he chose gaming as one of the skills Musk has when it was receently revealed that he didn't know enough about games to realise how badly he was faking playing one after lying about being literally world class in it.

It's a back handed compliment at best on Elon's "gaming skills"

Elon has deep knowledge in some areas — engineering questions, particularly — and some hobbies and interests (sci-fi, video games). Still, they’re pretty middlebrow, and his tweets make clear that he’s frequently outside of his depth in other areas.
Middlebrow hobby / interest level seems generous, sure, but it falls between zero knowledge and good enough to not need to fake it.

I read that as genuine belief in knowledge and skills in areas that Nate doesn't respect.

Apparently he doesn't respect them enough to be able to tell if someone is faking them.

It's less clear cut than his gaming fakery, but Musk's comments on sci-fi (including Iain M Banks Culture novels) are beyond cringe, somehow taking exactly the opposite message intended by the author.
