I think from a perspective of learning functional approaches it's useful to have things like this, as a more complex worked example of applying functional concepts to a problem. That is to say it seems like a broader version of "You know how in OO you made a 'Car' object with an 'Engine' with attributes and functions, well this is how it's done functionally".
